Bring Donny Back

Well I finally found a little bit of information on Donny Deutch’s show “The Big Idea”.  It appears that the show has been put on hiatus because of the economy.

Gee, that makes sense.  Take the one show on TV that applies to all self-employed small business owners and remove it.  Heck, small business only makes up, what, 70% of the economy?  Small business owners don’t need the encouragement in times like this, right?

Geez.

C’mon, CNBC.  While I didn’t necessarily agree with the path the show had taken recently, I’m certainly not happy to see it go.

There is a petition, although I don’t think it’s getting much press.  Plus, the letter they ask you to print out and send to the CNBC execs isn’t exactly polite.  I say go ahead and sign the silly petition, and then write your own heartfelt letter.  You can catch more flies with honey…

Is the Big Idea a Dead Idea?

Wednesday night I switched over to CNBC to see if the Big Idea show was still the same ‘ol talk or if they had started to revamp back to what it was a year or so ago.  I was surprised to see that the show wasn’t even on.

Today I pulled up the Big Idea website and it looks like the site hasn’t been updated since late Nov.  Is the show off the air?  If so, I think that is terrible.  I’ve complained about the format of the show (in the last year or so) in the past, but never wished that it go off the air.

I think if they went back to their previous (and highly successful) format of different segments, interviews, etc it would still be a wildly popular show.  I drew a bunch of inspiration from that show in its early times.  I got some great ideas and marketing ideas from that show.

Big Idea Not so Big Any More

Back in May I wrote about how much I enjoyed Donny Deutsch’s Big Idea show.  Well, since then it seems the show has gone downhill.  What used to be great interviews with successful owners, inspiration, new product showcases and more has now turned into a repetive and dull 3-panel discussion of the economy.

Sure, the down economy is taking its toll on businesses, but there are plenty of businesses that are succeeding, and quite well, in these times.

What happened to ‘Will it Play in Peoria’?  Great bit.

What happened to the thirty second quick questions to the (usually) 2-person expert panel?

What happened to the ‘Million Dollar Idea’?  I really enjoyed not only seeing the new products, but listening to actual wholesale buyers and such.  They had great advice and tips.

The show nowadays seems to be “We gotta help these people”, with every night’s show featuring call-ins of one sob story after another.  The more negative and sad the story, the more they promote it.  Talk about uninspirational…

I’ve actually taken the show off my DVR, and I’ve unsubscribed to the phone text messages too.  They weren’t anything as advertised (tips and quick info about small business).  All they were were advertisements about the next show.

I’m not sure who’s idea it was to change the format from what was wildly popular (and inspirational), but they certainly didn’t have a Big idea.

Use the Local Newschannel for Ideas

If you run a local community or small business website and are needing ideas on how to get some free press, why not piggyback off the local items of interest?

There are two top news stories this week in Saint Louis.

  • Flooding

I’ve already started a photo contest related to the flooding.  Take a picture of flooded areas, or perhaps a teenager filling a sandbag, or perhaps an elderly gentleman donating water to workers.  I’ll post the pictures, send out a press release about my contest, and get more traffic and brand recognition.  The winner will get a $25 gas card, which appeals to pretty much everyone nowadays.

  • Anheuser Busch Takeover

Several ‘web-people’ have already taken advantage of this, launching sites such as SaveBudweiser and SaveAB. Smart because they’re getting free mentions on all the news broadcasts, radio stations and links galore from beer lovers and proud Saint Louis bloggers.  They’ve started petitions (even if useless, these encourage people to spread the word about the website) and forums to discuss the takeover.

Check out the news. Even if its depressing, there is still plenty of goodness to be found if you’ve got a somewhat creative mind.  People are happy to jump on a bandwagon, all you have to do is hook up the tractor and get in front of them.
