Experience Equals Qualification

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

I finally got around to watching Tim Ferriss’ Trial by Fire show on the DVR.  Pretty cool.  Tim took five days out of his life to learn an ancient Japanese art that normally takes years to accomplish.  At the end of his five days, he had his ‘trial by fire’ – he either passed or failed.  In this case, he passed a test that could take you or I a year to do.

So I guess you could say Tim has a year’s worth of experience in the art of yabusame, right?

Today I had a short phone interview with a recruiter who is looking for a person to fill a senior SEO position at a major travel company.  The first few questions were normal, what’s your salary requirements, will you relocate, etc.  Then she asked about my experience.  I’ve only been doing SEO for about three and a half years, so that’s what I told her.

As soon as I said that, she might as well just hung up.

She asked nothing about the websites I run, the rankings I’ve achieved, or the happy customers I’ve created.  Once I gave her a number, she pretty much decided I wasn’t who she wanted.

In her book, Tim Ferriss would have 5 days experience at yabusame, and I have 3.5 years worth of SEO.  It’s not what you can do, how much you can learn, or what you can achieve, for her it comes down to time.  IMO, that’s a mistake.

Which Financial Affiliate Company Do I Use

Since I post messages on here, or mention payday loans, etc. I’m often asked what company I use.  Well, I used to use one called Financial Affiliate Marketing, but now they have rebranded as Credit Federal.

Go forth and make money!

Big Idea Not so Big Any More

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

Back in May I wrote about how much I enjoyed Donny Deutsch’s Big Idea show.  Well, since then it seems the show has gone downhill.  What used to be great interviews with successful owners, inspiration, new product showcases and more has now turned into a repetive and dull 3-panel discussion of the economy.

Sure, the down economy is taking its toll on businesses, but there are plenty of businesses that are succeeding, and quite well, in these times.

What happened to ‘Will it Play in Peoria’?  Great bit.

What happened to the thirty second quick questions to the (usually) 2-person expert panel?

What happened to the ‘Million Dollar Idea’?  I really enjoyed not only seeing the new products, but listening to actual wholesale buyers and such.  They had great advice and tips.

The show nowadays seems to be “We gotta help these people”, with every night’s show featuring call-ins of one sob story after another.  The more negative and sad the story, the more they promote it.  Talk about uninspirational…

I’ve actually taken the show off my DVR, and I’ve unsubscribed to the phone text messages too.  They weren’t anything as advertised (tips and quick info about small business).  All they were were advertisements about the next show.

I’m not sure who’s idea it was to change the format from what was wildly popular (and inspirational), but they certainly didn’t have a Big idea.

Tuesday is Off to a Great Start

Tuesday, December 2nd, 2008

I left my house at about 5:50 this morning, and before I got out of the subdivision, I was sitting behind the flashing lights of a police car.

The officer finally walked up to the truck and I asked him what was up.  He asked where I was going, where I lived (umm, right around the corner where you just saw me leave from).  Asked for my license and then gave me some BS about ‘looking for a white Dodge pickup in the area’.  Yeah, ok.

There just happened to be one in the driveway across from where he pulled me over, so I pointed to it and said “there ya go”.  He smiled, gave me back my license and said have a nice day.

Not sure what that was all really about, but whatever.
